THE FOOTBALL CLUB YOU SUPPORT KNOW YOU, HERE'S HOW
Football, a language most people understand, a survey showed that three out of every five boys over the age of 16 in Nigeria is either an Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool fan.
Even more girls are catching up to the trend.
This conjures a phenomenal viewership in the country, some of these elite clubs have planted academies across the country, some stars even visit once in a while, the European elite trophy “The champions league” parades the cup at Lagos before each season begins, Manchester City struck a deal with one of the leading telecommunication industries in Nigeria, TECNO.
Africa’s most populous country is definitely a gold mine for the big boys. But why so? We here in Nigeria, we do not buy official Jerseys direct from the club (one of the biggest source of income for these clubs), only a few wealthy individuals in this economy can afford this, mostly we buy third party shirts. We do not pay for tickets to watch these teams play at their home grounds, we do not even buy other merchandise ranging from training kits, mugs, scalps to other branded sales. So how do these clubs turn followership to income? Viewing centers.
Yes, the #80 or #100 you play each match day is the source. How? You would think, now let me enlighten you. Andre a hardcore Chelsea fan goes to a viewing center to watch Chelsea play Bournemouth. He pays #100. He comes again for the next match day and the next, and the next. The owner of the viewing center accumulates these funds as well as the money paid by other customers because he needs enough money for the next DSTV subscription. The owner then pays to DSTV for their services from these funds acquired.
Now, DSTV has to keep buying rights to showcase these matches, they then buy rights from the Premier League. The Premier League receives these income and they share it among their member clubs, Chelsea included. You can see from the above, that no matter how small, Andre’s money ended up in Chelsea’s pocket.
This knowledge will put you in awe when you think about how most fans just go to viewing centers and argue with a rival fan throughout the entire match and only really concentrates when a goal is scored.
Keep arguing guys, they keep making their money. Also the next time someone asks you “Man U even know you?”. Just give him the link to this article.
