When is Beating a Child too much?

Growing up, I remember a certain grandmother who was beating her grandchild so hard that she was literally stomping the child on the ground. The child wouldn't cry and the mother started chanting "winsh" as she hit the child even harder .
I grew up in Benin, we always had a fear for old bini women and I was damn too young and scared to confront the grandmother.

Probably, to the grandmother she was doing the right thing, training the child the right way. Some folks will agree and quote the popular "spare the rod spoil the child"
But how can you beat a child so hard in the name of love and religion?

When my mother would wake me up with "eba turning stick" for been late for school, it made complete sense to me. I was totally deserving of it.

When my dad would wake me up by pouring water in my ears, it was annoying but funny even to me.
But whenever my Mom would lock me in a room and flog me for like 30 mins till I had marks and injuries, that didn't make sense. It never did.
At some point, I always felt she was just enjoying herself or was just venting out her frustrations on me.

When my Dad would beat my elder brothers with koboko in the name of "former military Man", it disturbed me. My dad would beat them till they were bleeding from their injuries.
He had his reasons backed up by scriptures for doing all he did. To my Dad, he was training the children to do right.

I'm not a parent and I don't want to be one soon but I know that it's not love to beat your children hard. It just can't be.
You can't love a thing and inflict so much pain to it.
Take our phones for example, remember the BlackBerry days? You just had to wait for your phone to finish "hanging", you dare not smash it to the ground...
Why? It was precious to you, you've spent a lot on it.
Now how about a child?

Conclusively, I'm not against beating a child, No. But let it never be moved by anger or else the whole essence of correcting will be gone. And lastly, whenever a child tells you the truth about his wrong, try as much as possible not to beat that child. Teach the child to know the value of Honesty.
