Because Of Our Parents
I read the summary of Hamlet many years ago.
Recently, i came across a John Marsden's rewrite and
i did really love it. There was something about the
story.
Hamlet and his father.
The story begins with Hamlet's father's ghost
appearing to him and telling him of his cold murder,
charging him to take revenge... And i think that was
where the end of Hamlet's life began.
I like to believe that Hamlet could have had a good
life. Done all his princely duties, courted and married
Ophelia, had kids and ruled Denmark; the people loved him anywayy. He could have had a good life...But his father took that away. He sent Hamlet on a path that ended in his destruction.
So now i wonder... How many times have we kids had
our lives changed because of our parents?? How many
children have had to give up what they truly love and
gone after something their parents wanted?? I like to
think the answer to these questions will be a lot... A
lot of children have lost their lives for their parents...
Sometimes it feels like because they brought us
into this world, care for us and all that; somehow
they own us... Dont get me wrong, im not pushing for
disrespect... Of course we do owe our parents a lot;
they give up things too but giving up a life i would have
loved is just too much a price...
From birth... Parents choose our names, religion,
values, beliefs etc... Nobody cares if the child in
question won't like it.
I used to advocate that birth certificates should be issued at the age of 7, so that at least the kids get to pick their names... It sounds weird but its true.
Some parents pick the class the child goes, the
course the child studies. Not asking what if he
doesnt want that or what if she cant cope?? It's a
fairly unfair thing.
Every child should be given the right to choose. Let
him study medicine because he wants to not because you want to be called "Mama doctor"
... She should get married when she wants and to whom she wants not because you want to see/carry your grandchildren or you want to have a rich in-law/ a better life.
Please to all parents and intending, dont rule your
child's life. They are your children and not passports
to have/do all the things you never got the chance to
do. Dont ruin his/her life like Hamlet's father did.
