The NMA and JOHESU RIFT...
Theres this quote that says
Nothing is either right or wrong because everything is right and wrong.
It's the reason for varying views, notions and beliefs that fuels arguments, and Arguments, although exhausting, is key to progress.
It is indeed encourageable for everyone to argue once in a while.
Today's topic for discussion is such a sensitive matter that affects everyone but patients even more.
Yes! It's the JOHESU strike.
What is it about?
Well, clicking this link already shows you have an idea or an exact of knowledge of the demands of the union.
Still, I ll make a quick summary.
It's the call for an adjusted salary structure that matches that of Doctors.
And the appointment of other health workers as consultants with payment of specialist allowance that could put them in charge of clinical care.
In plain English, they want higher pay structure, right to be consultants and to also lead the hospital.
This Strike gets a little twist.
Weeks later into the strike, the National Medical association releases a memo threatening to strike too if JOHESU's demands are approved and implemented.
That's pretty much it about the strike.
Who does this strike affect?
Virtually everyone. Workers on strike aren't being paid and you can feel the financial strain on their families.
Doctors find it too impossible to work with assistance.
Patients are fleeing in masses and that means no patient for students to learn with.
Nobody is spared.
What are people saying about it?
Pardon me for feeding you with all that boring intro. This is where it gets interesting.
There are 3 factions; people who think it's the fault of doctors
Those who blame the other health workers but doctors
And those who blame the government
Those who blame doctors...
Well, they think it's no business of Doctors what other health workers want and they have no right whatsoever to interfere with their demands...
An added notion is that Doctors know what doctors should know, nurses know what nurses should know and so on and forth and it doesn't mean no one knows more than the other.
And yeah, concerning leadership of hospitals, they feel it is utter madness for doctor to stake a birth right to it and that everyone should be entitled to that summit of power.
People who blame other health workers?
Some feel the horrible state of Nigeria's health sector offers little or no place for consultancy in other professions and it is perceived as nothing but a means to cause turbulence to the already shaking Stability that exists.
Others feel Nurses, in particular don't know enough to ask for a higher pay structure. They believe that knowledge is in different weights and that the knowledge nurses earn is beffiting for their pay.
Of note is what Sheriff thinks, sheriff thinks the health system is fashioned like that of our colonial masters, the UK and that under this system, doctors earn the most and doctors alone can become CMD's, C-MACs and DC-MACs and the same applies in the USA with the best health system in the world.
He believes that if JOHESU'sdemands are answered, it would be a grave deviation from the norm.
Lastly, Ochuwa wonders why there is even the JOHESU association; if we all need each other to function then why form an association that segregates only Doctors?
My view, I'm a medical student suffering the effects of the strike. There are no students for me to learn with. I realise that none of the associations care about people beneath, be it NMA or JOHESU and it's all just a thing of power, ego and money .
I'll tell you I'm on the side of my fellow doctors but deep down, I'm on the side of whatever calls the strike off so that I can graduate.

If I'm picking sides ama have to go with those who blame the doctors for trynna interfere in the matter. Considering doctors are always going on strike themselves asking for this today and that tomorrow like an over pampered kid. But I'm not gonna take sides here because the feud between these guys is just a war of ego as it is now. I listened to the JOHESU leader talk on TV today and according to him, the rumors about them wanting to earn same as doctors is untrue. Even though they might want that in the long run, its not what the strike is about. And no, I'm not gonna tell what its really about. I'd prefer y'all took the time to find out yourselves. Maybe when you've truly understood what these guys are fighting for, you can then begin to judge them like y'all are already doing.
